It's all disturbing in so many ways: the scale of burning up resources instead of solving for human needs and dreams. That can't last in the long run because the resources are not renewable, but economics acts faster than ecology. Even the current messed-up economics won't sustain that grift. Yay?

We could think of good questions ahead of time, that sort of thing. "Me and what army? This!" A buddy system.
05.10.2025 21:05 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My academic advisor (a mom of 4 and a hero of women in academia) often said that if it's a shark situation, one quick bop on the nose might stop it. Figuratively speaking. I saw her at that, too, for example, with a warning tone, a glare, and a pointed pause, "Let me finish!!!" when interrupted.

I tried again right now. I wonder why the backgrounds and arrays are so consistent. I started a new thread with this prompt at the top.
29.09.2025 11:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A sad result over at Mastodon, really. What could be changed in the mathematical community in order to get a different outcome?
29.09.2025 10:15 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0Children playing with mathematical objects like hyperbolic saddles, polyhedra, and paper airplanes.
An idea: Start by sharing your research topic with a five-year-old.
Can we welcome children and their families? The obvious reason: we need the next generation of math. A deeper reason: young kids are amazing sources of math connections and creativity, since their thinking is very divergent.
AIs can deal with formal math represented in formulas (that is, the math language), though never 100% reliably. They are spectacularly bad at any transfer between representations, such as writing a realistic scenario that models a formula or creating an image with a given number of objects.
29.09.2025 09:17 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0With constant oversight π, I use AI in teaching to:
- proofread;
- search the web (RIP Google) and look up "What do you call that thing...?" and other fuzzy searches; you can prompt AI to avoid sources suspected of AI contamination; π
- that's it!
Language models work okay for these language tasks.

Beaded Archimedean Solids!!!
I had lots of fun over the past two weeks making these for the pigeonholes at the TMiP conference.
[Each n-regular graph has an n-colouring and there's a pair of colours on each one which form a Hamiltonian cycle.]
