Pretty sure the M.C. Escher prints hanging in the hallways near the math classrooms do more math outreach on our campus than any of the events we run.

I was JUST thinking this is like action research that's so participant-initiated the *researcher* is the one who doesn't know it's happening πŸ˜πŸ˜‚πŸ˜πŸ˜‚

To clarify: I vaguely remember a part of GeoGebra being acquired ~5 years ago. As a user, I've had 0 reminders since then. My old stuff is where I left it; the old buttons and URLs haven't moved. TIL the buyer went bankrupt; did it affect GeoGebra tools and people, did the nonprofit take over, or..?

Again, sounds fake but absolutely happened. Another world is possible, for sure, but we do have to model it & possibly even create it, or recreate it, and maybe also (I think) try to conjure it into being at tiny scale before working to build it out little by little into something larger & durable.

A story about "Arcadia" by Stoppard starting research on cancer and chaos theory in the 1990s.

In 1993, I was finishing my undergraduate research in chaos theory, "Bifurcation of Heart Polygons." It was a small example for a group project mapping out a zoo of dynamical systems. I still love the subject area and try to share its big ideas with children. #iTeachMath

Here is a sophisticated pattern-matching take on the force-sensitives in Star Wars: the films depict the reality as visualized by these characters in their minds. Something like the attached art piece (Joel Robinson), but significantly more elaborate. "Andor" plays with this a bit in-universe.

There are lots of reasons why I think higher ed would be a better, richer place if more people who had a history of academic struggle became professors. The way I deal with cheatingβ€”and the tools I have for preventing, rather than punishing, itβ€”are a big example.

In case that was too obscure, a prominent part of the currently popular classroom management program called "Building Thinking Classrooms" is having students do their math in small groups on vertical whiteboards, with one marker per group, taking turns writing and talking.

Run an image search on "breakdown of social order": it returns mobs looting shops. Nope! Most of it breaks quietly. Then what? Have students stand in groups of 3, taking turns writing math solutions in toddler-size script line-by-line as they talk it through, or they lose every train of thought?

Two students working on their Fibonacci sequence in front of a white board that says "peer" at the top.

I was trying to convince a couple of inspired elementary math circle students to go to other students for peer review of their (quite amazing!) work. "No, no, NO! YOU check it. You are a peer, right? We are doing math together!" What would you say to that? #iTeachMath #MathChat

β€œWhy Are We Funding This?” Long-standing myths about β€œsilly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

Every year around Thanksgiving, I see tons of grad students post heartbreaking messages on social media about how their loved ones don’t understand or support their decision to study what seems like something pointless or silly.

Perhaps my American Scientist essay can help!
