Harvard stands its ground:
“No government can dictate what we teach, who we admit, or what we explore.”
— President Alan Garber
In any democracy, the lawyers are the guardrails. With America heading toward autocratic rule, we see how some firms have chosen. But it isn’t too late for others in the profession to choose to keep our democracy. I challenge all my students: keep the faith!

“Neither Harvard nor any other private university can allow itself to be taken over by the federal government,” Harvard attorneys wrote to federal officials. “Accordingly, Harvard will not accept the government’s terms.”

Referring to it as“important real estate”and suggesting U.S. control ignores the fact that Gaza is home to millions of people who have already endured decades of conflict, displacement, and blockade. True peace and justice can only come by respecting the rights, dignity, and freedom of those affected.
“Historically, the most terrible things—war, genocide, and slavery—have resulted not from disobedience, but from obedience.” —Howard Zinn

“The goal of this protest is to let the rest of Americans who aren’t participating see that we are standing up and hopefully when they see our strength, that will give them the courage to also stand up.”

1/5 After the #HandsOff protest in Boston, many people left their signs along the fence of the Granary, the cemetery where Paul Revere and Sam Adams are buried, as well as those killed in the Boston Massacre. I walked along and got pictures of many of the signs, though not all.
I don’t know who this guy is but I liked his sign! (NYC)

and societal interactions are dominated by power hierarchies.
This framework not only undermines democratic institutions but also normalizes authoritarian practices, posing significant threats to political morality and individual freedoms.
Consequently, actions like corruption may be reinterpreted as legitimate tributes to those in power, and the rule of law becomes subordinate to the perceived will of the people.
Reiff’s analysis underscores the inherent dangers of such a system, where status eclipses individual rights,
This collectivist approach implies that individuals should act in alignment with the leader’s vision without explicit directives, fostering a system where rewards and punishments are administered based on adherence to this vision.
Liberalism centers on the individual, emphasizing personal autonomy and justice. In contrast, illiberalism prioritizes “the people” as a collective entity, often defined by specific attributes such as race, ethnicity, or religion.

I very much enjoyed working with Chris Satoor on this discussion of Karl Marx. It is an episode of his series on philosophers: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDPR...
Douglas Burnham & Peter Lamb @peterlamb1.bsky.social reconstruct Marx’s early writings into a cohesive political philosophy, showcasing their relevance to modern issues. This book applies Marxian ideas to contemporary contexts, paving the way for future research.
I highly recommend this book.
