New research on Nightjar DNA shows limited genetic diversity and an increase in inbreeding since the mid 19th century. Read the full findings. ๐Ÿ“– bit.ly/NightjarDNAStudy

Hi James, apologies for late reply. โ€œ33โ€ is a bird that has been released on Dartmoor in 2023 as part of headstarting efforts. Still waiting for news on the other. it was Yellow left leg tag, X46 on white tag right leg.

Dogs pollute water with pesticides even weeks after flea treatment When dogs given spot treatments for fleas go swimming, they release levels of pesticides dangerous to aquatic life for at least a month after the treatment

If your dog will jump in the nearest river, pond or lake given half a chance, don't use spot-on treatments for fleas and ticks, say researchers.

@norfolknats.bsky.social .A long overdue first visit to the Fens of Norfolk produced 3 lifetime firsts within an hour of arriving at Strumpshaw Fen. What a great few days away despite a poor forecast that meant inverts were calmer and easier to observe
:-). Lots more besides

Go well Catrin! A bird that as you say, used to breed in wisteria on my aunties Dartmoor farm. So hard to find them now. The association with wetlands is interesting and hopefully my work on @nationaltrust.org.uk Killerton estate (where theyโ€™re hanging on), will bear fruit as we create more wetland

Whilst in Devon Iโ€™ve seen 1 adult small tortoiseshell so far this year. Deeply concerning. Whatโ€™s going on @martinswarren.bsky.social

Couldnโ€™t believe what I was reading in the latest Devon Bird Report- in 1973 there were 27 singing males in my local Stoke Woods Exeter. Now itโ€™s a struggle to find even 1 spot fly โ˜น๏ธ

A tricky start to my @btoengland.bsky.social #BBS in Devon with a brisk wind making listening difficult. A smart male redstart was the best (rare on this patch), but no willow/garden warbler nor whitethroat or swallow - a rather depressing trend. One plus - skylark prob breeding in herbal ley ๐Ÿ’š

Osprey love triangle caught on camera A rare Osprey 'threesome', involving two females and one male, has formed an unusual but co-operative nesting arrangement in the Scottish Borders, captured on a live camera by the Tweed Valley Osprey Project. The birds have laid four eggs and show surprisingly tolerant behaviour towards one another.

Highlights of a #lowcarbonbirding cycle to @rspbengland.bsky.social Exminster marshes was a spoonbill going to roost, a group of curlew and whimbrel coming off the estuary at high tide, close enough for two leg tags to be read on former.
