…and yet not a waste, because we have drawn a clear line in the sand. We will not accept racism or censorship. Authors have stood firm and we have won.
We will bear the losses now, but we have shown our strength and made it easier for others to take a stand.
Olivia de Zilva published her debut with Pink Shorts press along with Alex Cothren and would have been speaking
Notes in the aftermath: some thoughts post-Adelaide

Adelaide Festival is done - and the rest of the board has stepped down
Adelaide Writers Week is worth saving and hopefully can be saved from the immense damage done to it by its own board. But the ease with which the damage was done says that it’s time for a newer, nimbler, less restricted festival in its wake
Vandalism is the word. Cancellation seems like the most likely outcome and there will be those who see that as a victory for control of the arts. Appreciate your attention on the unfolding events. InDaily have been excellent also
I have been sent a copy of Adelaide Festival's response to the letter raising concerns about Thomas Friedman's participating in Adelaide Writers Week.
The response says that Friedman could not participate due to "last minute scheduling issues".
Richard Flanagan on point: "But with this act of utter folly and appalling weakness, the Adelaide Festival board – and the politicians who direct it – have, by scapegoating a Palestinian writer, now destroyed Adelaide Writers Week for the foreseeable future..." www.smh.com.au/national/if-...
A guerrilla festival is indeed being discussed 📚❤️ ✊🏼

Travis Head, the left hander of darkness
Beautiful piece, I love writing like this that comes out a while after the book, particularly one that I’ve been wrestling with all year. Its conclusion still stirs anger in me that I’m curious about, feels less like atonement than surrender
We are delighted to announce that Jennifer Mills has been appointed Chair of the ASA Board of Directors. Outgoing Chair, Sophie Cunningham, will remain on the Board as Deputy Chair, continuing her valued contribution to the ASA.

Great get for the ASA
Big glow up from AI, Doggett is hero for the Shield but I reckon he bowls around one thirty thousand kilometres an hour
Insect transformation was the romantasy of the times?
Sons cricket was cancelled after ten overs. I don’t know where they’re getting their Hellenism from but a bunch of ten year olds were running around the ovals yelling “Knock it off Zeus!”
That makes sense, ebooks have been around a long time now. Maybe everyone got reading during Covid and now they want to keep microdosing
I got told that conventional wisdom when novels were king was that anything smaller cut into profits and looked less appealing on the shelf- like paying for a ticket to a 60 minute movie. But ebooks changed how people saw word count, so novellas have been predicted to make a print comeback for years
That’s why you write “the end” at the end. I always put my beginning right after the title, so it’s pretty obvious. And then in the rest of the book, I will occasionally have characters say things like “Here we are, in the middle of the story” just to keep it clear. Follow me for more writing tips
I’m always vacillating between “none of this is new” and “we need to go back to 2004 and destroy the forums before they metastasised”
It’s like a combination of genuine addicts and guys whose life goals used to be curating peep shows. To be fair the internet was their promised land
How many people wrote “free biscuit”?
They need that Adelaide juice
Big get for the Richell
Nah, I don’t disagree with Tony. Let her work be appreciated for even the strangest times in a strange history of a very normal show
Uh, call me crazy but on you it works
Famously despised episode, though presumably no one blames Keaton for that
Sorry sorry complete stranger here who had this pop up on my feed. But gen CBT practice would be no thought challenging for Os (no point, O don’t care) OR likely adverse events (not rational). Different approach for those things, don’t want to get stuck in arguments with yourself for no benefit
Does Fitzgerald work an example of a precocious young talent being nurtured by publishing? Bro went to Princeton and dormed with his future gatekeepers.
