The Drennan-McTier letters, Volume 1: 1776–1793 - Irish Manuscripts The Drennan–McTier Correspondence is unique. Between 1776 and 1819, William Drennan, a doctor in Newry and Dublin, and his sister Martha McTier in Belfast exchanged over 1,400 letters, discussing ever...

Martha McTier encouraging William Drennan to publish in 1783:

'If you have equal talents ... make use of them - gain the honour and enjoy it. ... for politics now ceases to be local, and so great and open the foundation, every man may build upon it that has materials.'

@lhaasis.bsky.social any thoughts on what "F.E." might mean under the "age" column in a royal navy document?

One little girl from a mostly Black school group raised her hand at this point and said "My grandma says you have to practice what you preach." 😂 I was like, "She's right!"

So I started saying that Jefferson actually had his own standards for what made a good slaveholder. He preferred to keep families together and to avoid corporal punishment. At Monticello he OFTEN sold people from their families and had people beaten. He didn't live up to his own standards.

When I was a guide at Monticello and got asked the inevitable "was he a good slave owner?" question I used to just say "there's no such thing as a good slave owner." But in practice I found that landed more like a scolding than an actual explanation.

"I have mentioned already a fact about slave ownership: that ordinary, even good, human beings will nearly always exploit those over whom they have absolute power. We have only to read the actual history of slavery in all all centuries and cultures to see that." Like, yup. That's it! Nicely put!

Let me be clear. There will not be a budget with Glenn Youngkin’s Data Center tax breaks in it. Glenn drove up YOUR utility bills to give tax breaks to data centers. Strong as battleship steel, I will fight for affordability for the people and encourage Gov Spanberger to join me.

This didn't happen. The perception that it did is largely based on fictional shows that were about rich people. Much more common was a household where one person (theoretically Dad in a het household) was the higher earner and paid the housing costs and the other paid utilities & food

I just had to fill out one of those "are you human" tests to access a website but the images were AI generated, so I had to guess whether the monstrously huge "hat" which took up an entire sidewalk and bled into a brick building counted as a "hat." I guessed no. I was wrong.

Announcement for the “Recast/Reclaim” March 14 exhibit opening at Jefferson School African American Heritage Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. Image of one ton of bronze ingots rendered from the 2023 melting of Charlottesville’s notorious statue of Robert E. Lee, the attempted preservation of which mobilized fascists to hold their violent 12 Aug 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville. The bronze ingots will be recast into new public art for the city of Charlottesville.

Charlottesville: Swords Into Plowshares needs your input. How should we recast the bronze ingots from the melted Lee statue? How can we reclaim public space? Come meet the design firms, see their proposals, view photos of the melting. 6pm Saturday, March 14 at the Jefferson School. www.sipcville.com

Tried to explain daylight savings to my two year old in terms she could understand, and I clearly failed, because she got really mad and yelled that she was going to eat the farmers

I lived in a conservative town during the Obama presidency. Did the contempt "radical republicans" displayed for Obama reveal their contempt for Americans? Or do you stop being an American when you become a liberal, as this phrasing implies?

shockingly people are capable of simultaneously,

1. Hating their government

2. Hating the people who bomb and sanction their country, making regular life impossible and murdering members of their family, even more

a progressive income tax? sorry kiddo, that betrays a "utopian" desire that can only ever end in tragedy. but a relentless program of constant wars, occupations, and genocides fast and slow, for oil, land, and fulfilling the commands of a blood-hungry god? thats just Adults in the Room doing Policy

UVA has nothing but simmering contempt for the people who work in their hospital. A job where it is really important where you arrive on time, they make you park approximately ten million miles away. And you have to pay for it, so it's just a salary decrease.

UVA loves nothing more than extorting its employees. Park further away and spend less time with your children every day or pay us 972 DOLLARS
