CSWEP strongly condemns Larry Summers’ behavior as revealed in the email correspondence with the late Jeffrey Epstein. While abuse of power in the economics profession is not new, rarely has the intent behind such abuse been so clearly stated.
1/ Egalitarianism should begin at home. I link to this article by @bencasselman.bsky.social in light of the communications between Larry Summers and Jeffrey Epstein that have just been released. The released emails and the fact of friendship are vile.

🚨Economics students! People who know or teach economics students!🚨

I’ve decided not to post my annual “women on the Econ job market” thread this year. Social media has splintered too much, and now that I’ve left academia I’m focused on other priorities.
Investors are betting big bucks on the idea that AI will create an explosion of leisure time...e.g. it was a key part of the public rationale for the massive $55bn takeover of video games maker Electronic Arts. But are they right?? (short thread linked to my column today www.ft.com/content/4011...)

What if America lifts sanctions on Russia but Europe does not? Access to US tech, currency and payment networks, some say, is what Russia really wants. But the old continent has its own weapons. Ignored and threatened, it may be tempted to use them www.economist.com/finance-and-...
Huge congratulations to @helenmiller.bsky.social ! She's an absolutely fantastic choice, I am really looking forward to her leadership of the IFS.
Econ PhD students and Postdocs!!!
Make sure you submit your papers to the QMUL workshop - the deadline to submit is next Friday. We’ve got some great keynotes! :)
And don’t believe the rumours about London weather in May. I hear it’ll be glorious and sunny.
Actually @therestpolitics.bsky.social, make that a topic of your conversation please: why is it so hard to make people outside of UK Higher Education see how dire and dangerous the structurally failing sector is? Local economies about to sink; R&D all but stagnated; education blandified.
With electrification so central to net-zero & delivering 60% of emissions cuts by 2040, top CCC recommendation is to make electricity prices cheaper
(Weirdly, most news coverage focused on low-carbon choices eg diet, despite the much greater role for other solutions)
10/10
We're excited to welcome @lgadenne.bsky.social to Oxford today for the CSAE Lunchtime Seminar.

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.
We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.
2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.
Fantastic resources here, thanks for sharing!
For the first time since 2022, it looks like Ukraine is winning the economic war. But it faces strong headwinds: the uptick of war, the downtick of domestic resources... and Donald Trump www.economist.com/finance-and-... Great to collaborate with @olliecarroll.bsky.social
Cool RCT on air purifiers -> test scores in China. Air purifiers on day of test improved scores by 0.1sd! Reduction in indoor PM2.5 from purifiers was ~20ug in their setting. So, effect would prob be smaller at avg US PM levels, but maybe larger on wildfire smoke day. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...
New paper characterizing trends in wildfire smoke PM2.5 in the US, incl. updated daily dataset and implications for air quality regulation. Below is animation of 2023.

*MALARIA VACCINES* are a huge scientific breakthrough. But the world is dragging its feet on rolling them out.
We examine why, and how to go faster.

French cities with higher supply elasticity see lower price growth. This variation in supply elasticity is explained by variation in the restrictiveness of local land-use regulations.

Absolutely - it's outdoor PM2.5. I don't think there is data with decent coverage of indoor PM2.5 (I'd love to be wrong) but you're right: individual behavior inside the home (incl. cooking!) can lead to massive spikes.
Please send your papers to Shafik and me (and a fantastic team of expert scientific committee members) and join us for this first edition of the IIPF Congress in East Africa!
Thanks a lot John, and thanks for the clarification! I was referring to your AER that goes up to 2016, things do look pretty different since you're right. We were even more puzzled by the trend since Covid when we saw how different things looked in the US...
