‘There is no use in trying,’ said Alice; ‘one can’t believe impossible things.’ ‘I dare say you haven’t had much practice,’ said the Queen. ‘When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.’

A photo of Judy Heumann at a protest next to Justin Dart, Marca Bristo, and others. Below in white text is a quote from Being Heumann: "“July 26, 1990, was a glorious summer day in Washington D.C. 3,000 people were gathered on the South Lawn of the White House. In front, standing on a platform, was President George H.R. Bush, with Justin Dart as his side. As President Bush began to speak, a hush fell on the enormous crowd. ‘Let the shameful wall of exclusion finally come tumbling down,’ he said. And he sat down at a desk and signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. Our time had come. After nearly 20 years of protesting 5 presidents, Republican and Democratic - from one coast to the other - we had created, what I believe to be, the strongest, most comprehensive civil rights legislation for disability in the world.”
Today marks the 35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act - a landmark piece of legislation that Judy Heumann was instrumental in the passage of.
In her memoir Being Heumann, Judy describes this day 35 years ago… (via www.facebook.com/TheHeumannPe...)
Education is fundamentally about relationships before it's about information. You'll never get someone to open their mind to new and challenging ideas if you don't have a trusting relationship with them as a baseline. But then all they care about is installing relations of domination & subordination

Finally, the claim that before some point in the 1980s or 1990s, autistic people were unseen and absent from school and society, is not only to erase the complicated truth of our own histories, but to reinforce some of the very misperceptions we claim to oppose. It carries an implication that those of us who did have lives in our communities, or who were sitting in school, weren’t really autistic. That perhaps we were the “very high functioning,” or “just quirky,” but that noticeably disabled autistic people would’ve been institutionalized. And it’s not only not true, it inadvertently reinforces assertions of autism epidemic proponents who insist that anyone truly autistic would necessarily be readily identifiable as such.
"The truth is that very often we were seen, our challenges were noticed, but most people didn’t know how to understand what they were seeing, and thus substituted other explanations."
