Drs. Purtle, Lindsey, et al. found that when they or loved ones are in mental health crisis, Republicans would favor family/friends but avoid 988, while Democrats are more open to help from various sources. Tailoring 988 messages to different segments is crucial for wider reach.

Their Health Affairs study identified 5 distinct population segments with regard to help-seeking preferences for individuals or their loved ones in #Suicide/#MentalHealth crisis. In addition, findings suggest Republicans are more resistant to using @988lifeline.bsky.social than Democrats.
