Miami Review of Comics has been really solid. I don't get to it very often but New York Comics & Picture-Story Symposium on youtube is good too

These are secretly all their favorite things so I'm making lots of $$$
Noah Van Sciver is probably your best bet. Although I think he's already done a book about the Grateful Dead. Brian Blomerth might work too if you're okay with everyone being dogs. I doubt Max Clotfelter would sign on but his style is probably what you're looking for too.

i am still sort of piecing through what i need to replace after getting mugged, but one of the more frustrating things is that i had finally tracked down a copy of this book. if anyone has a line on a reasonably priced copy (not the $1000 a dork on abebooks is asking for), can you please let me know

20.01.2025 01:55 — 👍 72 🔁 9 💬 2 📌 1Do you know how his translations compare to other translators working off material from the same era?
18.01.2025 19:08 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I do wonder if there's a peculiarity to the time period? For example, there's a particular flavor to the writing in golden age American comics. It's not all the same writer, and there's certainly variation, but it's all got a similar clunky quality.
18.01.2025 19:08 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Great point. The only thing they all have in common is the translator. I appreciate your perspective. I feel like I'm able to form my own detailed critical thinking with the artwork in comics, but taking a detailed look at the writing doesn't come as natural.
18.01.2025 18:59 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Maybe it's because I'm not a great writer on the prose level either, but I've often appreciated his work for the same reason you take issue. As I understand it, a lot of his awkwardness is designed to mimic the awkwardness of the original text. His work on Ebisu Yoshikazu's comics is a great example

Letter to Babette - my comic from Double Digest #3: Hairball published by @pete-faecke.bsky.social
the theme of Hairball was funny animals so i made a gothic vampire rat comic.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. I missed a couple shows due to covid and it wound up being very very expensive. Gonna Trina get some more work done in 25 and get back on the circuit in 26.

I love the way the 3rd panel looks in this state and I think a similar composition might make a nice painting.
Really really beautiful lines on this. The shapes in the legs and feet are particularly impressive. A perfect example of the beautiful simplicity DC cranked out in the 60s. There's a real calmness to this type of drawing that I strive for myself.
