We could go out at night and play, if we stayed closer to home; often we were racing our bikes around the neighborhood empty streets before sunrise. It was freedom. Played and fished for crawdads in drainage ditches, excavated empty fields (“treasure hunting”). Felt like being rich, in the best way.
