There’s a pitcher on the Seattle Mariners named Criswell. Batters to be pitied. Batters to be despised.

True. And the 8:30pm time slot (and 7:30pm in Central time!) also helped w/ younger viewers, I'm sure.

TRILOGY OF TERROR aired on ABC against MASH and the People's Choice Awards on CBS. NBC counter-programmed w/ a TV movie starring Martin Sheen about the sinking of a passenger ship.

It's quite the generational touchstone! Sadly, I was too young to watch that original broadcast and didn't see it until the '80s, I think.

Kino may have licensed the transfer for their 2018 release from Disney, but I don't think that would preclude a label like Criterion from releasing MoMA's restoration.

Maybe licensing it for the Criterion Channel is a good sign.

My new book THE CURSE OF QUEEN KELLY will be published this month by @stickingplacebk.bsky.social – on 27 March, Gloria Swanson’s birthday, no less.

Yes. The first four POLICE SQUAD episodes aired in March of 1982, then the remaining two were burned off in July after the show was canceled.

It was rerun on CBS in the summer of 1991, but no additional episodes were produced.

Indeed. The Naked Gun movies were fun, but they never matched the brilliance of Police Squad.

This morning @status.news produces a long list of his attacks on press freedom before asking:

"Should the WHCA treat Trump as just another president participating in a century-old Washington traditionβ€”or as someone who blatantly attacks First Amendment freedoms at every turn?"

NOTHING SACRED is the public domain, so there would be nothing stopping a physical media release. I remember how the VHS tapes used to proliferate in the bargain bins.

YouTube video by Kino Lorber Nothing Sacred | Full Movie | 1937

Kino has posted what I believe is their restored transfer of NOTHING SACRED to YouTube, so you can compare it to MoMA's transfer on Criterion Channel.

The differences in color tones are startling at times. My personal preference is for MoMA's richer, warmer transfer

According to MoMA, this transfer is "the first to reflect the experimental color design of the film’s first 1937 release."

Their restoration is from the Technicolor separations, while Kino's is from a fine grain master positive print.

"Better" is subjective. I would say MoMA's is more accurate.

A screen cap from the Criterion Channel.

A screen cap from the Criterion Channel.

William Wellman's NOTHING SACRED (1937) w/ Fredric March and Carole Lombard is now on Criterion Channel.

This is the MoMA restoration from the original Technicolor separations, w/ warm, golden tones that are completely lost in other transfers.

It looks and sounds glorious. #FilmSky

POLICE SQUAD! debuted on ABC #OTD in 1982.

Leslie Nielsen starred in this cop show parody from creators
David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker (AIRPLANE!).

It was so chock-full of visual and verbal gags, you had to watch it multiple times to get all the jokes. #TVSky

I watched it for the first time in the mid-1980s. It was scored by DARK SHADOWS composer Robert Cobert and featured two actors from the show, so, like much of Curtis' 1970s work, it feels very DS-adjacent. That was a big plus for me in those days (and still).
