One factor known to be involved in the progression of endometriosis is oxidative stress. Through accumulation, reactive aldehydes can cause pain as supported by our Science Translational Medicine paper. However, not much was known about this being a mechanism for endometriosis-associated pain.

Using ALDH2*2 knock-in mice to reduce aldehyde metabolism and Alda-1 to activate ALDH2, we found Alda-1 prevents endometrial cyst growth, highlighting ALDH2’s role in endometriosis development.

Because not much is known about endometriosis, we tested the hypothesis that reactive aldehydes and reactive aldehyde accumulation underlies the painful condition of endometriosis.

Despite affecting ~176 million women worldwide, endometriosis screening, detection, and treatment has made little progress.

Many available treatments cause unwanted side effects and are at times ineffective.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) commonly occurs in those with type 2 DM by the mechanism of endothelial dysfunction. In collaboration with the Wagner Lab, we found that the V1-cal peptide improved vascular and cardiac function in HFpEF pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

We published a paper with Dr. Wagner studying endothelial dysfunction from diabetes that progresses to vascular disease. A peptide targeting TRPV1 limiting the interaction with 12(S)-HETE could limit early-stage vascular disease in T1DM mice. www.jci.org/articles/vie...

We explored the role of TRPV1 in remote cardioprotection.

When you inhibit TRPV1, you lose endogenous protection that occurs from injury such as an abdominal incision.

We explored whether myocardial infarction is regulated by TRPV1.

We found a specific peptide (V1-cal) was able to mitigate reperfusion injury through inhibition of TRPV1 and calcineurin interaction.

Ever wonder what receptor is responsible for the hot sensation after you eat a hot pepper? It’s a nociceptor called TRPV1

This week, we’re spicing things up and talking about Gross Lab research about TRPV1.

Myth bust: Alcohol may feel like it helps you sleep, but a 36-year Finnish twin study (n=13,851) shows higher alcohol use predicts worse sleep quality over time. 💤🚫🥃

The mitochondria, known as the cell’s energy factory, is damaged when alcohol is broken down, producing toxic byproducts like acetaldehyde and ROS. This damage contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction, a key factor in alcohol-related organ injury. @ericgross.bsky.social #alcoholawareness

When alcohol and tobacco mix, your body makes acetaldehyde—a toxin linked to cancer risk. Double trouble in one sip and puff.

Alcohol intolerance, also called ALDH2 deficiency, is a genetic condition that makes it hard for some people to break down a chemical from alcohol called acetaldehyde.
⚠️Build up of acetaldehyde could lead to long-term health risks!!!

When you drink alcohol, it boosts GABA (a calming brain chemical) and blocks glutamate (which stimulates brain activity). This combination of more calming signals and fewer stimulating signals is why alcohol can temporarily reduce pain.

Howard Haggard once asked, “What is alcohol doing in the organism?” 🍸 Though already explored as an anesthetic in the 1930s, no modern drugs come from its class. Our lab studies alcohol metabolism via ALDH2 to find new paths in anesthesia & pain relief.#standfordanesthesia
