Just spotted this! Yes, analysis shows the B&K BFO was used for the swooping melody. The melody exhibits slight linear sawtooth modulation of pitch, which is unique to the B&K at that time. The later non-swooping sections were performed on the 12 Jason oscillator/keying unit combo, two keys at once.

@dalek6388.bsky.social I noticed recently that the second Dalek movie has 2 sound effects from the TV series. The TARDIS interior has the TV door buzz pitched down as a drone, and over that is the electronic “moaning” from the Edge of Destruction explosion track. Why would they have access to these?

Been in fandom since the ‘90s. I think since fandom and the series imploded in the 80s large swathes have been very toxic, much like the radioactive wasteland following a nuclear war. I was very pleased with Chris Chibnall’ plot points that annoyed the fan “fundamentalists”. Mission accomplished!

I think games should go even further - a rising, triumphant orchestral swell as your character slowly lifts the lid… followed by a sad trombone when it turns out to contain mouldy bread and a pebble.

Just ordered a pair of unijunction transistors so I can oscillate like it’s the early ‘70s. Planning to characterize a few circuits so they can be reimplemented using a 555 timer as the hysteretic element.

I’m starting to think EMS had a point with their pin matrices… this is a single patch from The Daemons, a tremolo lead. Some of the patching is to emulate an off-centre distorted sine wave for the tremolo modulation.

A random thing that I noticed today: The musical cue that underscores the exploding helicopter in The Daemons is an overdubbed version of a sting from the prior story, Colony in Space, at 9m04 in Episode 6.

I think it’s inevitable that I’m going to - at some point - build the majority of an EMS Synthi 100, driven mostly by the desire to reproduce ‘70s Doctor Who incidental music. Why? Why not?

@aliona.bsky.social Someone at Larian's probably already mentioned it, but DON'T UPDATE BG3 on your PS5. Patch 8 has been accidentally released on PS5 but will be rolled back. Any saves made on patch 8 won't work on patch 7. Your existing manual saves are still fine though.

Incidentally, the Nestene energy unit effect from Spearhead, the preceding story, also appears to have been created the same way, albeit with four oscillators and no unwired plugs to break the internal normalling. Interestingly(?), the effect is played backwards when reused in Terror of the Autons.

Today's self-nerdsnipe: Using spectral analysis to work out how the Radiophonic Workshop produced the sound of Dr. Quinn's Silurian homing device. It appears to have used one of their Crystal Palace rotary sequencers, three oscillators, and three unwired plugs to allow crosstalk between inputs...
