@ekbal.bsky.social presents 'Disasters by Design'
All about the 2023 KahramanmaraΕ, Turkey earthquake.
A fault line running under Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, has the potential to release a 6.5 magnitude earthquake.
BGS geoscientist @ekbal.bsky.social & partners spoke with @geographical.co.uk about the fault line what the impact of the quake could be.

10.12.2024 13:44 β π 24 π 8 π¬ 1 π 0Happy to share that I've been accepted onto the @ukri.org Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Science Committee.
NERC is the UK's primary earth & env research funding agency. The committee advises on priority investment areas and policies to support the delivery of NERC's science strategy βοΈ
Last night satellite #Sentinel1C launched into space! It will join its sibling to restore the Sentinel-1 constellation, gathering more frequent, global, accurate data to monitor changes on the Earth's surface. It will aid COMET research into #volcanoesπand #earthquakesπ and support event response.
06.12.2024 20:03 β π 19 π 6 π¬ 0 π 3Multicriteria analysis of meat and milk alternatives. The analysis displays the synthesis scores of a food productβs overall performance in replacing meat or dairy per calorie (A) or per serving (B). The score is based on the nutritional, health, environmental, and cost changes of replacing meat and dairy with meat and milk alternatives. It gives equal weight to health, environmental, and cost impacts. The health domain includes the nutritional and mortality analyses with equal weights. The environmental domain includes analyses of changes in GHG emissions, land use, and water use, with weights assigned based on the needed contribution of dietary changes toward staying within food-related environmental limits (or planetary boundaries), which meant assigning a greater weight to changes in GHG emissions (0.65) than changes in land use (0.17) and water use (0.18).

"unprocessed plant-based foods such as soybeans, peas, and beans are best suited for replacing meat and dairy in high-income countries"
Absolutely! Then it becomes fun and meaningful at the same time. π

03.12.2024 08:44 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The Sendai Tracker reports are all open and transparent, including their methodologies. While that doesn't mean there aren't errors in the underlying data, it's a good first step in trying to look at the problem from a more data-centric point of view
26.11.2024 16:04 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Absolutely! Not only will it help us understand perceptions of damage but it will also help us identify the most vulnerable and design practical action plans to build resilience amongst those groups.

Youβve likely heard how he heroically traced an epidemic to a single water source: the broad street pump. But thatβs not how the story really endedβ¦

24.11.2024 18:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is a great figure. For all the doom & gloom about climate inaction, we have made a big dent over the past 25 years.
What started out as 3.5-4Β°C increase by 2100 is now down to 2-3Β°C. Of course, more work is urgently needed but this is progress! We don't let up now. h/t @hausfath.bsky.social
