Maybe not quite what you are asking, but for me the English translations of Yakov Perelman's "mathematics can be fun" and "physics can be fun" were formative. I was gifted them before I knew much English, but enjoyed them anyway, and enjoyed them again after I learned English.

belated cheers for the occasion, and my deepest thanks for some especially memorable moments in those 12 years. Happy memories!

Have you considered an "honest GFE" category, for a glimpse of what it's like with a girlfriend you've been with long enough that she trusts you to be there for her when she's had a bad day (or figures good riddance works too, if you fail at that)?

The caption says "The keep and keeper"
I lost the framed original of this while I was going through St Pancras on Sunday Nov 2nd around 3pm. Would love if it had been found by anyone?

I can't wait until the people's will prevails in the European Union, and we are done with this nonsense of changing the clocks twice a year. At this point, the only reason we're still doing it is because some fascists thought it makes them look good at home to have forced us all to keep doing this.

My first cello teacher, though, Mrs. Watson, will forever be my default answer when asked about my favourite musician.
I did not sufficiently appreciate at the time, that she wanted me to enjoy playing badly, in hope of getting good at it, rather than feel bad about not being good at it yet.

I picked cello, when I signed up for music lessons and the instruments available were any of the classical strings, because violin and viola seemed uncomfortable to play and bass seemed uncomfortable to carry around. I have come to accept I have no attitude, but I still love the sound.

Okay. The people have spoken.
For every reskeet this gets, I will post a random picture from my camera roll with no explanation (other than alt text).
Let the games begin.

Is life often terrible? Yes.
Are there still always people out there going “Let’s make a cool ass thing for other people to see?” Also yes.

I agree it would be wise for Finland to not deliver the ship until the Finnish companies involved been paid in full. My understanding is there are several other countries in need of upgrading their icebreaker fleet, and there aren’t enough used icebreakers in existence to meet that demand.
10.10.2025 14:59 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0
On the other hand, the US really does need several new icebreakers, and Finnish expertise in designing and building icebreakers is unrivalled.
I can believe Trump has his mind set on icebreakers, and realistically this deal is the closest he can get to what he wants.

"what e-bikes did for cycling" is *absolutely not* a selling point in my neck of the woods.
But it does resonate with "it is really interesting for use cases marketing seems not to care about".

Fortunately, I always have a stash of beer at home.

And after D-day, the people most able to afford saying they were in the resistance all along, were those who collaborated with the nazis quietly. Those who really helped the resistance and survived? They had done their best to appear like collaborators, whenever they could without hurting the cause.

I don't advocate for the death of Nazis, I prefer them alive and held accountable.
But I also don't mourn them when they go.
