"What distinguishes the current approach is not industrial policy itself but how it operates—circumventing ordinary accountability mechanisms in favor of discretionary power."
Powerful piece by @alondra.bsky.social in @science.org .

Welcome to "curiosity-driven research" in the 2020s:

"MRC will make targeted investments enabling disciplines, technologies, methodologies and skills to combine when needed to address an important research question."

Vannevar Bush it's not.

WE ALL HAVE THE EXACT SAME GENETIC CODE THATS WHY SEX ACTUALLY WORKS

Interesting. The exact same could be said of James Watson (4 yrs younger) and molecular biology, Before the Fall (2007).

A black and white photo of a man suffering from smallpox. His face is riddled with pustules.

I posted a 1912 photo of a man with smallpox and someone asked if it was AI. That says something about the moment we’re living in: because of vaccination, we’re now so far removed from this virus that real images of it look fake. #medicalhistory #vaccines #vaccineswork #skystorians

And such a polite request, too!

But are you sure that’s not this week’s cryptotechno businessspeak jargon for authors?

It sounds so evil I can just imagine it.

New Yorker cartoon of a PhD committee around a table. The student punches a professor in the mouth. Another professor says to another, "An excellent defense. Let's give her the doctorate."

Oh, yeah. I sensed the media blitz as a child word-junkie. The ads were everywhere in the 1960s-70s. But it was "premium"—with quotes. Low-rent premium. Chivas, not Lagavulin.

Lol and as usual you wrote it down simply and got it out while I was immersed in fiddling with my thoughts and words.

ah, March on the East Coast... Yesterday it was 83 degrees and I was walking around in shorts and short sleeves. Now it's 38 and I'm back huddling under my afghan, watching it snow.

Global weirdening.

“-esque” = like, or similar to; hence connotations of being ersatz. If you’re looking for a note of skepticism or irony, use -esque.

If we mean derived from or in the manner of, then Bourdieusian, Bourdieuvian or even Bourduvian.

Perhaps the Mancunian @matthewcobb.bsky.social wld weigh in?

Skyvemind:
So who’s writing a serious history-of-capitalism take on the AI <cough> revolution? Who’s talking about the political economy and env’tal history of AI and data centers?

I’m pretty sure this calls for Marxists.

The “AI revolution” is going to make Net Zero seem quaint.

Holland is so adorable! In small towns, the men are taller than the stoplights!

And there is no better (or safer) way to tour the marvelous Low Countries breweries than by steel, 3-speed, upright bike w/ built-in lock and magneto headlight.

Arose today 445 CDT. Back in Baltimore by 1400 EDT. Grabbed falafel, had 30’ to eat & finish prepping class; taught said class 1600-1830. Ran some errands, reached the country @ 1930. Ate, washed up, now @ last winding down @ 2045 EDT.
19-hr day.

I can enjoy that in short well-spaced bouts.
