Clarifying remarks on the results of R01 Several clauses in its provisions that a portion of delegates in DSA disapproved of. The first "be it resolved clause" has an unclear, chauvinistic message, claiming that DSA would reject the "right to exist' of any state self conceived in racial or theocratic terms, or otherwise premised on the perpetual political demographic supremacy of one ethnic or religious group over another. This line has been argued to be an excuse that follows the common right-wing racist punchline that Arab and/or Islamic majority countries (and an eventual free Palestine) are theocratic dictatorships that deserve contempt instead of a response to growing threat of US imperialism and violence.

Clarifying remarks on the results of R01 An amendment to the resolution would have changed this clause, to mention instead that DSA rejects "any settler-colonial state, meaning any state premised on the displacement or dispossession of the indigenous population and the enforced political supremacy of the settler population." This amendment failed very narrowly, which is the main reason why those who are fully in support of Palestinian self- determination and resistance chose to vote down the original, unamended resolution, rather than force a resolution that did not truly represent the vision of the organization.

Early this month, DSA held its biannual national convention. Orlando sent 8 delegates and 1 alternate to vote on DSA's direction for the next two years. In a historic vote, Resolution 22 "For a Fighting Anti-Zionist DSA" passed which strengthens the National organization and our Local chapters commitment to Palestinian Liberation and Resistance. Versions of this resolution have passed in various Locals throughout the country, including in Orlando with our passing of "Proposal for an Anti-Zionist Orlando DSA in both Principle and Praxis" in early 2024.

This resolution affirms DSA's commitment to the principles of "al- Thawabit". According to the text of the resolution, "DSA shall make organizing in solidarity with the Palestinian cause a priority until Palestine is free, unequivocally affirming our commitment to 'al-Thawabit', the principles originally set by the Palestinian National Council in 1977 and repeatedly reaffirmed since, which are the Palestinian people's right to resistance, the Palestinian right to self-determination, the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, and the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland from the river to the sea

The resolution requires principled anti- Zionism as a requirement for any elected to receive Local or National endorsement and support from DSA. It also allows us to revoke endorsements for politicians who are in violation of anti-zionist principles Expels any member found to be in substantial disagreement with anti- Zionism and has proven to have material support for the Zionist Entity It also requires that DSA will continue to provide material and organizing support to divestment campaigns, the student intifada, and partner organizations working towards Palestinian liberation

Today, Donald Trump made his visit to Alligator Alcatraz. Thousands have protested, including members of the Miccosukee and Seminole Tribes, for whom the land which the camp occupies is considered sacred. The irony is not lost on us that the administration is building a mass deportation center on sacred Native American land.  There are hundreds of trucks moving in and out of the detention camp. The money to build this was allocated from FEMA funds, jeopardizing Florida’s future as hurricane season encroaches. It’s comical as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” is being debated, which will end healthcare and food assistance for millions of americans. The money is instead being spent on mass deportation campaigns. The camp is being built to provide thousands of beds to expand ICE’s capacity to deport many thousands of members of our community with the claim that “immigration is an emergency”. Immigrants are not a natural disaster or an emergency. They are a valuable, beneficial part of our community. America claims to be a nation of immigrants but that grace is not extended to modern immigrants. Many of these individuals are fleeing countries that the United States has had a direct hand in creating the conditions and instability that caused in the global south. 

Currently, local jails, including the Orange County jail, are being used to facilitate the deportation of immigrants via 287(g) agreements. However, there has been mass public resistance by the people, pushing back on the use of our resources on these deportation campaigns. We call on Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings and the Orange County Board of Commissioners to halt the 287(g) agreement facilitating ICE deportations.this public resistance to local cooperation is one of the reasons that has pushed Trump, DeSantis and Noem to build Alligator Alcatraz. The rural, isolated location of this camp will allow them to further mistreat the detainees. One comparison is Krome Detention Center in Miami-Dade County, which has a long history of medical neglect, overcrowding and inhumane treatment that has resulted in the deaths of individuals such as Isidro Perez. ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ IS PLANNED TO HAVE MANY MORE BEDS THAN KROME, IN A MORE RURAL LOCATION WHICH IS EXPECTED TO HAVE LESS OVERSIGHT. THIS IS EXTREMELY CONCERNING AS WE ENTER HURRICANE SEASON GIVEN THE FACT THAT OUR GOVERNMENT HAS A CONSISTENT HISTORY OF ABANDONING INDIVDUALS WHO HAVE BEEN DETAINED. WE SAW THIS IN MANY TIMES IN THE PAST INCLUDING IN 2024 DURING HURRINCANE MILTON WHEN 1200 IMPRISONED INDIVIDUALS WERE LEFT IN A MANATEE COUNTY JAIL AMID AN EVACUATION ORDER PLACING THEM IN A ZONE A. BEING THAT ALIGATOR ALCATRAZ IS BUILT FROM A “TEMPORARY TENT” STRUCTURE AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PREVIOUS PICTURE, NOT ONLY WILL MIGRANTS HAVE TO FACE INHUMANE WEATHER CONDITIONS THAT HAVE TAKEN OTHERS LIVES IN DETENTION CENTERS SUCH AS KROME, BUT ALSO HAVE THEIR FATE LEFT TO THE WILL OF OFFICIALS THAT HAVE PROVEN TIME AND TIME AGAIN THEY DO NOT CARE! JOIN YOUR LOCAL MOVEMENTS! SPEAK OUT AGAINST YOUR LOCAL OFFICALS ENDORSING THIS! STOP ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ!

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings Continues to Enable ICE As Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings prepares to run for Florida governor, undoubtedly he will lean on his past as a cop to claim that he has spent his life protecting our community. Of course this is a lie. What Jerry Demings protects is his corporate and personal interests.

Currently, the Orange County Jail is operating as a hub for deportation of our local immigrant community. Black and brown people in particular are being terrorized by ICE. Mayor Jerry Demings is enabling this through agreements with ICE and the Orange County Jail. He is scared of Trump and Ron DeSantis going after him for standing up to ICE. As a result, he is complying in advance and supporting ICE as it continues it's mass deportation campaign. We do not want a governor who will concede to Donald Trump. We do not want a governor who will fail to protect the most vulnerable members of our community. We want a governor that will fight for our rights. Remember this, Mayor Demings, as you begin your campaign for governor.
