For those wondering: this is a canary resuscitator, once used in coal mines to revive birds after gas exposure. In my drawing, the door’s been left open and the bird left to die—a symbol of ignored warnings and failing safeguards for civil liberties in the U.S.

Andrea Gibson, Colorado’s poet laureate and a national voice on LGBTQ issues, has died “Come See Me in the Good Light,” a documentary film made by the poet and their wife dealing with Gibson’s cancer diagnosis in 2021, won festival favorite at Sundance this year. Gibson was 49.

They will be so missed but not forgotten 💜

This piece adds gritty and "real" elements of being human with the use of an acrylic medium base to show the underlying struggles we all go through in our quest for peace. The addition of iridescence and translucency illustrate moments of clarity and self-realization.
