Seeking an alliance with Putin is to get leverage against China. Europe and Ukraine are, from his perspective, irrelevant. Lies about the war in Ukraine, the status of legal systems and democracy in Europe, originate in this goal.
Trump strives to dismount both University and Democracy as institutions, so that the oligarchy, of which he is part, can rule the U.S. and the world as they see fit. Lies and misconceptions about woke, stolen elections, criminal immigrants etc, all originate in this ultimate goal.
Trump lies and Trump is misinformed. But he's not stupid: his lies serve a purpose. Being outraged about the lies he uses is useless, and making fun of his misconceptions even less so.

I fail to understand why the affordance concept is so important. Very few who use it make any use of the psychological framework it was constructed for. This article seems to be identifying a useful abstraction level, if it is about affordancesm
