The voices of the most marginalised queer and trans people should be given greater weight. They are the ones who need pride marches, they are the ones who have the worst history with cops, and they are the ones who clearly don’t feel safe marching with uniformed police.

Surveys can only tell you so much. Victorian LGBTIQA+ people have repeatedly said over many years they don’t want police in their Pride March. The VicPol withdrawal from this year’s march is a welcome step towards making our pride event safer.

A bit of a personal note. I’m working on a paper on wage theft from staff at Australian universities at the moment.

The level of wrongdoing is nuts. We’re up to $265m in underpayments that have been admitted to by Australian public universities.
