I also hope this is true (that it was bad communication and the MT/ML stuff was only used for dev) but I did see some screenshots of item names that missed jokes etc that did point to MT

I am biased because the first Dead of the Brain project never even disclosed it was MT/guesslation until they were called out later but yeah, that part’s no bueno

I did go out of my way to mention that because I also hate when people lump LLM with other tools

I’m not a giant expert and I don’t want to go to bat for this project but I also don’t want people to just say “doing *anything* like this is out of order”

I do think there’s a lot of people who *say* “oh I am fluent I can do this” but it isn’t easy to find someone who will play the game in source language, do research to make a real effort at the author’s intentions, and are actually good

But I do understand the first translation aspect.

Well as someone who was annoyed at Dead of the Brain’s initial guesslation/ML translation, I do understand that and felt that, especially because that person lied and didn’t mention it until it was called out later (and took money on their Patreon)

(So I am biased toward this “better” solution)

I guess also just to be accurate, SGGG’s translation is not entirely MT, but it seems some was left in, like item names and such

I actually do think it’s really good they gave the option for you to roll your own translation with their tools.

I personally don't think it's worth going to all the effort of ROMhacking for something machine translated in the end result.

If you want to argue that part, by all means, I agree. But I also say it's ok to use MT for development purposes.

But I also had to frequently pause work to wait for him to finish a portion of the script I'd extracted, re-insert it, play a little more, find more text, etc.

Another project, it was a lot faster to get it into (bad) English to just get an idea what the hell was going on.

But there's a lot of takes where I think people are reacting to LLMs/Modern AI that you should *never* use anything but human translation during development

ftr Policenauts only had human translation even in dev bc I was lucky enough to have someone willing to do that (very onerous) work

The object is not to do the final translation - it's to get your workflow down to extract and re-insert text, so your (human) translator who eventually joins the project can work on stuff and your dev will be around things like "wait that new text is long, how do I cram it in."

(It's easier to know why when you can read what the game is saying is my point. Sometimes you see a whole new sentence out of nowhere and if you can't read it, you might as well be capturing symbols.)

This work helps serve your (human) translator hopefully doing your final script!

It's not easy to find a translator who will work with you, read partial text scrapes ("did you get it all? this doesn't look complete"), etc. and it makes total sense to use Google Translate or something to do the prep work and figure out "why is the text different when I load a save later?"

No, it isn't great that the Segagaga English translation's final form is machine translated. But it was disclosed, and - *excepting the ChatGPT part* - it is fine to use it during development.

"Rare" is not the word to use for people who can do ASM and are fluent in Japanese.
