The moss-carpeted base of a tree, which has many arms, and a cute face, and makes you realise why history is full of people who went out for walks in the countryside and wrote stories about bullshit creatures and events.

Very much enjoying this mossy octo-bear creature I found hiding in a tree trunk on a walk in the Blackdown Hills.

That is a fantastic photo!! Her great(?) niece, Cherry Drummond, did a truly excellent biography of her. Sadly out of print now.

June Saunders, Women's Royal Naval Service, stands on the fo'c'sle of her boat preparing to make fast. Official Admiralty photograph by Harold William John Tomlin, Plymouth, November 1944. Imperial War Museum: A 26516.

Women have always gone to sea and faced the sea's dangers. Women were in many of the naval losses chronicled here, and are numbered among the casualties. Remembering them, and all the women afloat and ashore whose lives are caught up with the sea, on this #InternationalWomensDay #NavalHistory

“Pioneer” is the word: lesbian heroine Sylvia Townsend Warner wrote 7 utterly distinct novels which you probably don’t know since they are all so different to each other, 150 short stories, a history of Tudor church music and much else. Her (umpteen) letters are fascinating.

Hold on, I have a response meme for that (and posts lengthways and excessively announcing a social media exit in a really performative manner)

Sikelgaita (1040 – 1090) was a Lombard princess, and the wife of Duke Robert Guiscard of Apulia. Her heritage made her a vital asset to Robert's governance in Southern Italy. She frequently accompanied him on campaigns and is noted for leading troops in battle. #CelebratingWomen

No other word has done more damage to the craft of writing in recent years than “content”. Even if you’re using the word “content” ironically, or as a cute little joke, don’t. When someone calls writing “content” they’re pissing on someone’s hard work & passion. “Content” is Technosatan’s henchword.
