Joe says some disparaging things about girls and comics, oblivious to his shitty business sense, reality, and his garbage attitude. An exaggeration based on decades of comic book shop behavior and stunted fandom attitudes. It's better than it used to be, at least.

Back in 2019: was told while making Lower Decks that “too much happens in each episode, what if someone watching is making spaghetti and only half paying attention?”

Reading a big book of these strips probably contributed to choosing to do comics later. These were a lot of fun and bring back warm memories.
