Outside of the obvious immediate effects and people no fearing for their livelihood. I think one of the most awful effects of these layoffs in the Western industry, is the sheer breadth of systemic knowledge we're losing. Having devs and workers that know systems or ideas is vital to games.

Makuhita, what the FUCK is this? You fucked it all up. We spent half the city's budget on this fucking fountain, dude. Oh my fucking god.

I am awake early because my Pokemon friends are up early, and I won't let them stand in front of those buildings they were building me all day yesterday.

I'm making a game. But like, for real for real. I'm making a game I've been wanting to make for ten years.

But it's cool; I've been work-shopping this idea for ten years in my brain. It's time to make it exist and let other people manhandle it so we can make something we'll be proud of.

Busy day tomorrow. Gotta go to another meeting for work, and then have to do another meeting about the game I'm making. Only realizing just now that I ripped the bandage off on making a game, and have already roped a bunch of people into doing it with me, and now I gotta follow through.

Watching her leave my house through the window when I lean over and say "It's always been my fantasy to fuck inside a PC with default RGB settings," and flick a switch on my bed that turns it into a Corsair Dominator RAM stick.

Was planning on restoring all the towns in Pokopia to their original looks, but they don't seem to have the same layouts. Some stuff's been moved around! Ah well, I'll still aim to pretty up everything.

Pokopia is a very good game, AND it's also the biggest "Fuck you" to Palworld that everyone involved could have ever delivered.

So frame your dialogue the way you've actually experienced them in real-life. Think about what people are doing and what goes on in the midst of them. How where you were when you were having that conversation changed the way you were speaking or what you were saying. That helps avoid the white room.

The best way I go about it is to think of how real-life conversations go. When your roommates are talking to each other in the living room, everyone is doing their own thing, or fiddling with something while they converse. And other times, you're the third-party to WAY too much talking.

And importantly, maybe keep your dialogue succinct. You can avoid creating a conversation that occurs in a vacuum when that conversation is...not to the point, because sometimes it's not supposed to be, but effective. If people are talking too much or for too long, readers forget where they are.

So you can establish the setting of a particular scene first, or you can weave details about the setting into the dialogue itself ("Pardon the mess"/"Give the door a good shove, would you? It won't shut otherwise. Makes a terrible creak too.") Or you can break-up the dialogue (sparingly) to do it.

The way an disgruntled innkeep leads your hero to his shuttered office, and motions for them to take a seat, as he slumps himself into a creaky mahogany chair, can happen between one sentence of dialogue and the next. Maybe the light filtering thru the shutters can checker his face.

Just so other people see: You don't need to overdo description, but if there are key visuals of the scene in your mind (and there should be,) it helps to establish those before a dialogue begins, and weave character actions into it. It doesn't have to be exciting, but you should describe it anyway.

Mapped the back buttons on my pro controller to L and R for Pokopia, and I'm never going back. They should have added back buttons to controllers ages ago. I want more back buttons.

So of all the mahjong games out there, Dirtbag Mahjong is the one that finally helped the game click in my head. Turns out literally the only learning tool I needed was the shanten counter showing how close I am to tenpai.
Good job, Dirtbag Mahjong.
