I had a cracking day working at a WW2 Home Front schools' event at Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse yesterday!

'Captain Morgan' of the Home Guard put the children through their paces as new recruits, and the bayonet dummies still haven't recovered... πŸ˜‰

My talented wife has made me a Gansey!

It has the net mask pattern, as worn by the Sheringham fishermen 'Alma' West and Belsha Johnson, pictured below in c.1900-1914.

For details see: www.northfolk.org.uk/ganseys/sher...

The Gansey is perfect for both work and those chillier spring days! πŸ˜€

Memories of an Edith Cavell photoshoot at Norwich Cathedral on this day in 2014 with the excellent Paul Hurst, and the first time out for my WW1 Service Dress uniform, made by that clever Richard Knight of Khaki On Campaign!

Happy International Bagpipe Day!

The first photo here was taken in front of the John Frost Bridge having spent 3 splendid days playing snare drum with the Massed Pipes and Drums at the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem in September 2019.

A real privilege!

Happy International Women's Day everyone!

To mark the day here's a post from Bletchley Park, where I'm looking forward to working again this year - with a predominantly female events team - later this year!

I've just fitted the leatherwork to a maille collar, or standard, for wearing at my late-medieval and Tudor soldier presentations.

The maille was bought from the excellent Cāp-a-Pie 20 years ago but I'm not one to hurry... ... πŸ˜„

As it's World Book Day my personal recommendation is Jonathan Healey's 'The Blood in Winter', which tells the story of the countdown to the start of the English Civil War through 1641 and into 1642.

It reads like a very well informed thriller!

This is an interesting story about a member of the Colonial Marines, a regiment of black ex-slaves who fought as a part of the Royal Marines in the Anglo-American War of 1812-14, and his later emigration to the West Indies: www.facebook.com/share/p/1DTE...

I worked at Stories of Lynn Museum today discussing crime and punishment in Tudor England with local schoolchildren.

It's a fascinating building, complete with cells and courtroom, and functions as King's Lynn town hall...

It was WW2 'Home Front' day for Yr6 at Stoke Holy Cross Primary School yesterday and I enjoyed working with Hands On The Past!

I covered the role of the Home Guard and the (later) annual stirrup pump competition later proved particularly popular, if damp... πŸ˜„

Some chums of mine are taking part in this WW2 mystery, family event at Fort Nelson over half term, with Time Will Tell Theatre.

I can't do it this year but last year's Victorian one was great fun: highly recommended!

Is it still pantomime season?

Victorian horror story perhaps?

No, just me having fun at a Maharajah Duleep Singh educational day for local children at Ancient House Museum!

We've discussed the Anglo-Sikh Wars and other aspects of Victorian life.

I was recently delighted to receive a replica Wakefield hanger from Tod of Tod Cutler: it's of great quality and a real beauty!

See:

The hanger will complete my Tudor soldier/militiaman impression.
