Today Vancouver council is set to approve a staff recommendation to back away from their push to become a Bitcoin friendly city.
Here's my story about it, along with an extended montage about what Ken Sim has said about Bitcoin on various podcasts in the last two years.
Sean Orr is all but certain to run for council instead of mayor, but him getting thousands more views for his announcement than Azaroff’s ultimatum post is an affirmation to COPE supporters that they have their own leverage in these conversations
Yeah the 5+5+5 proposal from COPE already feels like way too many candidates, though I'm assuming that was probably them trying to find a middle ground with OneCity
4+4+4 including mayor seems like the absolute maximum that makes sense
This confirms that OneCity have been the holdout in negotiations
Their "softened" position was running six candidates for mayor and council, enough for a majority
If OneCity wants to help Ken Sim and ABC get re-elected, progressives will have no choice but to unite around COPE and the Greens
How Vancouver's left is doing this week
It's way too late in the day for formal votes such as the one proposed by OneCity. Plus, ultimatums sap trust among those you claim to want to work with.
And progressive parties will absolutely eat each other's lunches, confusing and alienating voters if they run more candidates than seats.
If Greens, COPE, and OneCity hope to remain relevant, an agreement is needed asap, with a joint statement agreeing to:
1. Endorse whichever progressive mayoral candidate is polling best at the end of July.
2. Run 3 candidates/party, with a 4th candidate going to the mayoral candidate's party.
I think it would be a less confusing and time consuming for everyone if OneCity just came right out and said that the only Unity outcome they’re interested in is COPE and the Greens ceasing to exist as independent political parties and encouraging their members to vote for OneCity.
Wow @onecityvan.bsky.social and @wazaroff.bsky.social are really doing their best to get Ken Sim re-elected
I can't see any reason for this ultimatum other than creating an excuse to sabotage negotiations for progressive unity

I had my concerns about such a young candidate but I'm tired of being told that a better world isn't possible and that we need to be "reasonable" while the world burns around us. Emily is saying all the right things that our current leaders lack the courage to say.
Vote for Emily!

I’m Emily Lowan & I'm running to be the next leader of the BC Green Party. I’ve spent the last decade organizing for climate justice & Indigenous rights. Our movement needs a political vehicle to change the conversation: to centre the people, not the corporate lobbyists. youtube.com/shorts/1B-Ny...

She adds they've denied access to pipeline construction on their territory before and will continue their efforts

This decision means that the PRGT pipeline can proceed with an environmental assessment from over a decade ago
The pipeline is owned my Trump's billionaire donors and opposed by Indigenous communities along the route
Shame on the BC NDP for allowing this project to go ahead!

Stop the cuts to library hours!
The people have spoken.
Ken Sim & his billionaire-backed party have no mandate to continue underfunding our vital public services.
People waited hours in line to send a message. Sign & share: votecope.ca/libraries #FightForVancouver #vanpoli @seanorr.bsky.social
If the Jewish Fed and CIJA thought they actually had anything on @seanorr.bsky.social, they would have used it during the by-election.
Instead they waited to launch a sneak attack on a brand new councillor with an historic mandate.
The cynicism is deep. And deeply predictable.

Why is an ABC Vancouver politician contacting a person making death threats against Councillor Orr? This person claims to know Orr's address, is doxxing him, and advising people on how to break into his home.
Does ABC Mayor Ken Sim condone doxxing and murdering public officials? #vanpoli
The billionaires backing politicians like Ken Sim are sacrificing our future to enrich themselves.
Sean Orr will fight for civic governance that takes the long view and protects our city, our local green space, and our planet for future generations.

Pretty funny that Justin Trudeau is moments away from retiring and starting to get great press for standing up to Trump and then out of nowhere decided to scream "I AM A ZIONIST I LOVE COLONIZATION!"
Costs of Ken Sim's personal VPD detail total $226K since November, says VPD chief

How can anyone take this man seriously? He both shows contempt for democracy and admits no one is at their launch party. He jokes about taking bribes. He thinks by-elections are a joke and is counting on you not showing up to the polls. Let’s show them that Vancouver DOES care
Ken Sim is now being driven to work, personal appointments and campaign events in a SUV driven by his own VPD security detail
Over the last 5 months, it has cost $226,000. If it continues until the next election, the cost will be over $1 million

Outside Vancouver City Hall there was protest. Inside Mayor Ken Sim & his ABC party took another big step toward clearing the Downtown Eastside to make way for luxury condos. For our right wing mayor, Musk & Trump are both convenient distraction and political inspiration. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
