What really matters: fruit diversity increases dispersal, especially to distant patches. The ProteaChange team at Kogel Bay in the Western Cape, South Africa
I enjoyed some great discussions about the ecology of protea plants (and the manifold links to their animal partners) in the Western Cape over the last week. It's just such an amazing team and great place to work πΏπ¦ #ProteaChange

A first-year pygmy cormorant resting on a branch above the water.
The first pygmy cormorants have
bred in SE Germany in 2022 and they continue to expand. Similar trends occur for many other cormorant species globally, likely due to higher food availability and better legal protection. This first year bird is the first at my local patch in #Mainz. Success stories!
The figure shows the beauty and diversity of tree-related microhabitats recorded on Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.
Can we use tree-related microhabitats (TreMs)π³ as indicators of #tropical #biodiversity? Our new study led by Giovanni Bianco shows that TreM diversity actually increases with temperature and decreases with human impact on Kilimanjaro πΉπΏ Now published in Ecological Indicators: doi.org/10.1016/j.ec...

Thanks so much for this great contribution to the C&S section of Ecological Monographs! Charlotte's paper was actually one of our first invited contributions to this section. If you have cool and innovative ideas like this one, please have a look: www.esa.org/wp-content/u...
