We simulated how avian seed dispersal shapes connectivity b/w forest patches. What really matters: fruit diversity increases dispersal, especially to distant patches. Trait matching between interacting bird and plant species is widespread globally! Yet its importance for avian seed dispersal is not just about complementarity among consumers but it depends on the resource traits in a community πŸ§ͺ🌐 Now out in Ecology Letters: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

The ProteaChange team at Kogel Bay in the Western Cape, South Africa

I enjoyed some great discussions about the ecology of protea plants (and the manifold links to their animal partners) in the Western Cape over the last week. It's just such an amazing team and great place to work πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ #ProteaChange

A first-year pygmy cormorant resting on a branch above the water.

The first pygmy cormorants have
bred in SE Germany in 2022 and they continue to expand. Similar trends occur for many other cormorant species globally, likely due to higher food availability and better legal protection. This first year bird is the first at my local patch in #Mainz. Success stories!
