I mean that, as a rich person, if you're focus doesn't eventually shift from acquiring more wealth to doing good with what you have, you're screwing up. I realize the pithy statement I made above overstates that case, but I think JB Pritzker exemplifies someone who has made that shift.

Right. It's no sin to be born rich, you can't control that. Dying rich, however, means you have failed in your opportunity (which was more opportunity than most of us have) to help your fellow humans.

The petition was filed by the mother, even (according to the article, I haven't looked at the case independently.) The idea that a judge can tell parents they can't change a kid's name would make conservatives apoplectic if the kid wasn't trans.

Interesting. I think a court would certainly listen to the idea that defendant can't get a case dismissed because plaintiff died when defendant caused that to happen. My initial read is that they would give P the chance to amend it into a wrongful death claim, though. I could be wrong, of course.

Good question. His family has a wrongful death claim, and evidence that would be central to a defamation claim is also important there. The court just isn't going to call it a defamation claim. That's semantics at some level, but its also important to making sure you get a good result in court.

A recall amendment would be one possible idea. I've never lived in a state that has recall provisions, so I haven't studied them closely. I know Wisconsin and California have had some high profile recall elections relatively recently.

True, I haven't looked closely at Maryland law (the government may try to say some other law applies, but that seems a stretch). If defamation cases don't survive under the applicable law, that usually ends the case even if plaintiff dies during litigation.
