The battle to dismantle Blair’s Britain Conservatives’ biggest mistake was the adoption of the liberal agenda, the new right believes

Update: New Labour no longer Conservativism's greatest achievement. Terrific column by @robertshrimsley.bsky.social on the changing mood of the British right, this: www.ft.com/content/49ec...

This is very good. I'm becoming quite a fan of Thompson.

That says a lot about the culture of Bluesky, sadly

Yeah sorry I'm from there - these guys have basically sectarian views which they pretend are hands-across-the-divide. It doesn't pass the sniff test. They recycle and revive rather than challenge the old republican attitudes, and are trying to pass off trad ethnic hatred as fresh and irreverent. Yuk

By coincidence, re-watched this on Tuesday with son and his girlfriend (early 20s). Stands up really well, all the better for watching it now outside the 2009 ocean of regular Thick Of It viewing. So Tucker felt fresh again, and I felt freer to hate Olly. The Gen Zs laughed almost as much as me.

We are becoming extremely anti-social

- working from home
- watching videos alone
- staying single
- ordering meals for 1.

Fantastic article by @dkthomp.bsky.social @theatlantic.com

On Libertarianism, Populism, and Progressivism: A Conversation Between Yascha Mounk and Shikha Dalmia Why we need a recaliberation of the liberty movement

Excellent conversation between Yascha Mounk and our very own @shikhadalmia.bsky.social.

They talked libertarianism, populism, the political realignment Trump has wrought, older epochs like the one that featured conservatarianism, the nature of progressivism, and more.

Fact-checking the fact-checkers In a world where truth is always in doubt, how should we approach organisations that present themselves as fact-checkers? Should we recognise that nations and individuals always embed a biased…

In light of Meta recently ditching fact-checking on Facebook in a drive for β€˜free speech’, many of us might be questioning the role of fact-checking online. | https://buff.ly/4jajDlD

Zuckerberg's about-face on content moderation is a pretty useful lesson for governments. Peter Kyle said government has to treat big tech like nation states because they are so powerful.

But Trump hasn't done that. He demanded they bend the knee and they have. It's worth knowing.

What about 55?

Having read them both, I don't find that a fair or accurate representation. I have seen no misinformation from either. Julie is a respected campaigner on lesbian issues and Helen is a highly reputed former UK editor of The Economist. They are both very decent, liberal people and deserve to be heard.

Well, neither author does that, and I read both. We surely by now need to move past dismissing criticism of gender identity ideas as "hate" or "bigotry". It's just a different analysis.
I can't comment on festival organisers insisting on only one view of gender, but are you sure that's correct?

Why are you withdrawing, as a matter of interest? I'm guessing you aren't gender critical, but still not sure why people having different analysis of gender is intolerable? They wouldn't boycott it if you were going.

Just starting on Bluesky, let's see how it goes. Hoping it's a home for diversity of thought, and we can avoid meltdowns, or it'll be no better than the other place. Have to start positive 🌞

Facebook Is Done Pretending The social network has given up on fact-checking. That’s a good thing.

What Facebook called β€œfact-checking” was a pale imitation of the real thing, @ibogost.bsky.social writes. Good riddance!
