I only have one, but it's for the Marciana Library in Venice; so I think that's pretty good...

Yep. Strong contender for Greatest Living Welshman!

Happy Birthday, John Cale.

But we can also go back to sport and culture in South Africa. The years of sporting boycotts, "I ain't gonna play Sun City" and the like. Culture/sport is a soft power but an effective one.

True. I remember some really good stuff, ironically, from Iran for example.

Closed for renovation, but they have an official representation in the Arsenale and will again this year.

True (and one could of course add Iran to that list). But Russia, Israel and the USA have, if you like, the extra prestige of a pavilion in the Giardini. It makes them, if you like, more legitimate.

Agree on Israel and the US, it's never going to happen.

Yep. There are other countries as well, but those three, in particular, have the privilege of a pavilion in the Giardini. If you're there, it makes a statement. And, really, the Biennale should be making a stand on this.

β€˜A stage for whitewashing war crimes’: Venice Biennale urged to exclude Russia Ukraine criticises organisers’ decision to allow Russia to take part in prestigious art exhibition as β€˜incomprehensible’

This is disgraceful (and I can think of a number of other countries that shouldn't be there either...)

Yeah, I really dislike that as a phrase because it suggests that all they're there for is to be a victim and to scream a lot. Which is not true of three of the four people on my list (yes, Nicolodi is pictured screaming but that wasn't her screen persona at all). "Queen of Horror" it is, for me.

Heheh. Well, obviously, I want Wales to win a game this year. I wouldn't be distraught if Italy won as long as we played well, and it would be great for Italy if they could finish in the top half of the table. But on the other hand, Italy have two scalps this year and so, really, it has to be Wales.
