Carulli gave concerts and had a large number of students, including his son Gustavo. He was an innovator, adapting many orchestral and chamber pieces for guitar. Most of them are used today as teaching repertoire, especially for beginning guitarists.

He mastered the guitar on his own and became an outstanding virtuoso. At the beginning of the 19th century, the musician and composer moved to Paris, which was the center of musical life at the time. There he gained great popularity as a composer, performer and teacher.

Ferdinando Carulli (1770–1841) was an outstanding Italian guitarist, composer, and teacher. He is one of the most significant figures in the history of the classical guitar.
He was born into an aristocratic family, first learning to play the cello.
