My Year as a Degenerate Sports Gambler Practically overnight, America made wagering on a game as frictionless as checking the weather. I was determined to understand the consequences—for my country, and for myself.

“We took an ancient vice…put it on everyone’s phone, and made it as normal and frictionless as checking the weather. What could possibly go wrong?” I *hate* the extent to which gambling has infested everything; it’s not going to end well. [theatlantic.com]

These voices have morphed over time as the technology changes so it’s a little hard to keep track of when this might have happened. Or maybe I’m just using better headphones tonight.

Am I imagining things or does Vikram in Duolingo now speak French with more of a Quebecois accent? The way he says “pain” and “Lin” jumped out at me here:

The guy who habitually uses an American flag as a pocket square (which, not for nothing, suggests using the flag as a hankie) is overly concerned with optics? You don’t say.

The supposed explosion of the federal public service looks less explosive if you put it in per capita numbers and draw a line graph back to the mid-80s.

Sometimes when it happens to me - especially with Amazon - it seems the prediction algorithm assumes one package per address but the stop(s) before mine are often big multi-unit residential buildings that typically have many packages to drop off before the driver can move on. Should be fixable…

If I may potentially make this worse - I think the risk here isn’t that AI is going to nuke us, it’s that there’s a kind of guy who is going to see this and think that we should be more willing to use nukes because the computer thinks it’s a good idea

When this happened I got no information about it whatsoever, so I had to open a new case and wait to be told basically what I posted above (which doesn’t explain very much). It’s been like this for a decade!
