Budget 60 mm Petri dishes for C. elegans work (bought on Amazon of all places) are roughly 50% cheaper than Fisher Scientific or even Tritech. I’m testing to see if they’re actually sterile - will know after Thanksgiving. Great for dirt poor PIs at a PUI if they work!

I won't post a link to the product but search for "Kigley" on amazon. The product comes in a completely generic cardboard box with no markings. The plates are packaged in sleeves of 10 (instead of the usual 20). Other than that basically indistinguishable from plates from Fisher.

OK here are the results. Pipetted 5 mL of LB into two dishes. One dish in touched with a finger and spit into it, the other did nothing. Left in 37 degrees overnight. First plate had nasty things growing, second plate looked clean. conclusion: the petri dishes are sterile.
