For me the main issue was it makes little sense to setup a guy’s return as a ‘grave threat to the galaxy’ in a show set before some movies that would make it clear that he was not a big deal…

I think because within what the British system defines as an acceptable position to hold, the furthest ‘left’ you’re allowed to go is the Labour Right. Labour itself is nudged ever rightward in the hope of not having a left wing option at all, essentially.
