Exactly the wrong thing to do — as we've seen in CA, housing has to be crammed down the throats of "local leaders." They have too much power, not too little.

We've been running this "hey, let's make it nearly impossible to build new housing" experiment for decades and the results are in: Barring housing construction is to the left what tax cuts are to the right: a policy that hasn't worked and will never work but they keep pushing regardless.

If not building new housing prevented gentrification and kept housing prices down... SF would be least gentrified city with the lowest average rents in the country.
