Robert had been going to give a paper at the colloquium in memory of Malcolm Heath to be held in Leeds in May. It is a particular sadness that we will not, after all, be seeing him then. We will pass on details of funeral/ commemorative arrangements as they become available.

He was given an honorary doctorate by the Demokritos University of Thrace in 2019, and the Festschrift from the accompanying conference was published in 2024: S. Kyriakidis and Ch. Michalopoulos (eds) Secretis bene vivere silvis. Studies in Latin Literature in Honour of Robert Maltby (Newcastle).

In addition to his contribution to the study of Latin literature, he was an early champion of the Erasmus scheme, setting up exchanges between Leeds and universities in northern Italy and Greece in the 1990s.

We were deeply saddened to learn that our former colleague Robert Maltby died last week. Having taught at Leeds since 1989, Robert was Professor of Latin Philology by the time he took early retirement in 2013 and though he moved away from Leeds, he stayed in touch.
