Burnt wheat and barley grains, black due to carbonisation.

For example, at the Hittite capital of Hattusha, the burnt remains of a grain silo allowed researchers to uncover the largest archaeobotanical assemblage in the world, shedding light on everyday life and taxation in the Hittite Empire 2/2

The Great Fire of Rome began #OnThisDay (or maybe the day after) in AD 64, destroying almost 3/4 of the city.

Whilst a disaster for the #Romans, burning events are very useful for archaeologists, as they preserve organic remains, such as grain, which rarely survive normally. 1/2

The Bridgeness Distance Slab, carved in the AD140s, marked the eastern end of the Antonine Wall, Rome's most northerly frontier.

A dedicatory inscription is flanked by two reliefs which juxtapose military carnage and peaceful piety. (1/3)

A dark bronze sestertius from the reign of the Roman emperor Titus (79-81 CE), aka Titus Caesar Vespasianus, son of the emperor Vespasian. The coin depicts the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) in great detail - you can see the four arched stories, statues within the arches, and a two story portico (perhaps a connection between the Colosseum and Titus' baths) on the right side. It even depicts the alternating clypea, the huge circular bronze shields once placed on the cornice of the fourth floor, and in the center - facing us - the gilded quadriga sculpture over the north-east entry. On the left is the large conical monumental fountain - the Meta Sudans - which stood outside the Colosseum until 1936, when Mussolini had it destroyed to create a traffic circle for his fascist parades.

This is one of the earliest depictions of the Colosseum, a bronze sestertius issued by the emperor Titus to commemorate the amphitheater's completion. Only ten are known to exist. You can see the spectators, the statues in the arches, even the quadriga over the entrance. ๐Ÿบ #ancientbluesky 1/

A clay figurine of a man in front of a brazier. The figure has a reddish-brown hue and a short hairstyle an a beard. He is hunched forward, extending his hands toward a small rectangular brazier with a raised grill-like structure. A flat object, possibly a fan or a piece of fabric, rests in his hands, suggesting he is stoking the fire.

They are dog bones, all found in assemblages from bear baiting arenas and kennels at Bankside, Southwark. Fighting dogs were expensive, and pains were taken to ensure the animals' survival, hence the healed wounds.

Thereโ€™s something extraordinary about this otherwise pretty standard Late Bronze Age axehead:

A human fingerprint. A real, visible and tangible connection to someone from 3000 years ago. If that doesnโ€™t give you goosebumps, idk what will. ๐Ÿฅน

This is the strongroom in the headquarters building of the Roman fort at Corbridge, just south of Hadrian's Wall. Corbridge was a base for the Second Legion Augusta and the money to pay the troops who garrisoned the Wall would have been stored down in this underground chamber #RomanFortThursday
