Pancake Day reveals a new, highly divisive intergenerational split - while older generations are loyal to traditional lemon and sugar pancake topping, younger adults are more likely to say they prefer Nutella or chocolate spread on their pancakes.

The debate here actually seems relatively measured! More than one can sometimes say about these questions…

Handwritten note saying: "But I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything."

Let's celebrate #DarwinDay by reminding ourselves that everyone has moments when they feel worse for wear.

Darwin wrote to Charles Lyell in 1861:
"But I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything."

From Jacobean β€˜nonconformity’ to Restoration Nonconformity: three rectors, one parish, and English Church turmoil in a nutshell The parish of Ashton-under-Lyne near Manchester had only three rectors for nearly the whole of the seventeenth century: Henry Fairfax from 1619 to 1643; John Harrison from 1643 to 1662; and Thomas ...

#earlymodern #17thC I'm not on here often, but...my first ever history article is out! It's about the goings-on in 17th C Ashton-under-Lyne. I've been passionate about 17th C history for decades, but it's not my official academic field so I'm very excited :) www.tandfonline.com/eprint/MZICG...

β€˜There is a definite limit to the length of time a composer can go on writing in one dance rhythm (this limit is obviously reached by Ravel towards the end of La Valse and towards the beginning of Bolero).’

Quite funny to read a book which makes use of your scholarship but doesn’t say a word in acknowledgement and passes it off as the author’s own!

Apparently only twice in Premier League history has a side been winning three times and still gone on to lose. Both times it was Leeds. Iconic.

I love Qobuz - the little blurbs are refreshingly honest (even if infuriating at times!) and I find it very well set up for classical music.

Lots of churchwardens' accounts survive for the period from 1647 to 1660, and though the purchase of wine for Christmas (and Easter) decline a bit, it was quietly carried on in many churches. And people continued to skip work and spend their Christmas Day in the alehouse. Ho, ho, ho!

'I wish it could be Christmas every... er... month?'

We all know that Parliament abolished Christmas in 1647 (boo!), but they also created a new monthly holiday (yay!), enforceable by magistrates.

The actual Christmas ban caused riots later that year, but after that was barely enforced.
