Imagine being oncall, waking up at 2am, sifting through unmaintainable overengineered code, and then discover this is the source of the problem.

Indeed. No issues in using it if the complexity requires. But worth considering simpler alternatives otherwise.

They end up with 5 teams working on the same thing.

People fighting for scope.
