That motherfucker was canvassing at gay clubs at 2am on Halloween, man was on the streets talking to new Yorkers, running on a common sense platform folks could get behind. There's a lot Democrats could learn here, make better tiktoks isn't it

Don't forget that Zohran Mamdani spent his entire campaign standing proudly beside the trans community. He went to trans rights rallies just to show support. He proudly waved trans rights flags without hesitation. He refused to back down in support of trans rights. That makes me happy.

It's so mind boggling when someone is this confidently wrong and showing their whole ass by using no research. But what I REALLY love are the ppl dropping all the names of all the women who were BNF! I can't even be mad because he's so bad at this lmaoooo how embarrassing

The only truly ethical response that a self-described artist can make. Anything else is a betrayal of one's colleagues.

I've heard that about Lucas Films though I've also seen fanzines around. I feel like trying to control it like that never works out well and is even detrimental. I have no recs for that bc I don't follow Star Wars myself but I'm sure there might be something floating around on fanlore(dot)org

I think the only fanzines I own issues of that the book references are Galactic Discourse and Interstat. I've put it on my desk to remind me to get to it.

It's fun to know it'll be referenced when I get to it! Yes the 3 writers were heavily involved in early fandom, including helping create the 1st Star Trek con in NYC and officially publishing fanfic in the New Voyages anthologies via Bantam that also helped inform people that fic exists!

reading a book called Boldly Writing, which is a sort of chronicle of the early Star Trek fandom's fanzines and fanfiction, and it's really interesting. It's a fairly plain chronological retelling but it still speaks to me all these years later, mainly because of how it makes me feel about fandom 🧡

Hehe yes!!!! I own this book!! It's still in my to read pile but you just reminded me to move it up in case I get to do a panel in relation to it. Still so much to learn... I'm still working my way through Star Trek Lives which is also very entertaining

Abstract: In the early 1970s, Japan saw the emergence of three dynamic and overlapping communities of women and adolescent girls who challenged Japanese gender and sexual norms: the women’s liberation (Ε«man ribu) movement, the lesbian community, and a sphere comprised of artists and fans of queer shōjo manga (girls’ comics). In this talk, James Welker will discuss Transfiguring Women in Late Twentieth-Century Japan: Feminists, Lesbians, and Girls’ Comics Artists and Fans, which examines these communities and their cultural import. As he shows, individually and collectively, they found the normative understanding of the category β€œwomen” untenable and worked to redefine and expand its meaning by transfiguring ideas, images, and practices selectively appropriated from the β€œWest.” They did so, however, while remaining primarily focused on the local. Welker argues that their transfiguration of Western culture into something locally meaningful had tangible effects far beyond these communities.

You Should Probably Leave Substack You should probably leave Substack. Here’s why and how.

Happened to find this - it's a useful little website if you A) want to know why you should drop Substack and B) want a list of alternatives.

A couple also have tools to import your old SS posts over.
