Oh, gosh, I’m that way with Prometheus. Yeah, yeah, I know, but the vibes and visuals work well enough for me. 🤷‍♀️

Still from the fick: mother and daughter Kubrick-facing in an 18th-century French drawing room.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is indeed gorgeous, riveting 🔥.

Plus it contains the divine, under-sung Valeria Golino, who always knocks it out of the park (she’s the best thing in The Morning Show, and torched the screen in her brief Drops of God S1 stint).

Dairy group to seek designated status for 'Quebec poutine cheese' | CBC News A group representing Quebec's dairy industry says it's eyeing a special designation — similar to the one applied to Bordeaux wine or champagne — for the squeaky cheese curds best known as a key ingred...

I’ve been saying for years that poutine made/eaten outside of QC* is just sparkling cheese and gravy on fries,** so I’m feeling rather vindicated. 😂 shorturl.at/wujOC

*St. Albert cheese curds the obvious exception.
**It’s partly the curds but also the glorious dark QC fries, which have no equal.

My fellow Canadians are either naive or desperate for a coping strategy. Otherwise we wouldn’t have a many-thousands-page Criminal Code… 😂

And Canada is way too low there, oh my. I’d put it more in the average, IME from what my fellow Canadians say about trusting others around them.

More desire but less capacity for annexing Canada for the nickel alone (on which military manufacturing is heavily dependent).

Same problem in movies and TV. They want big, fast cash over properties with a lower opener but a steady, long tail

They don’t, and I think that really sank in for me during that big actors strike in the US a few years back. Like, Tom Hanks isn’t at all representative of the life/income of most working actors. 😂

The crap people ascribed to KH before she even had a chance for real power/action/policy continues to irk me to no end.

"How can you oppose war when Khamenei was evil?"

Simple. If you killed Donald Trump by nuking Washington DC, I would not mourn Trump but I'd still say you're an evil war criminal who belongs in the Hague. It's really not hard.

Criterion Channel “Coming March 1” montage listing several titles under the banner "Romanian New Wave”.

Well, that’s creepy: I signed up for 3 free months of Mubi weeks back in part to get access Radu Jude movies, which got me wanting to see the older Romanian New Wave flicks I devoured/reviewed in the aughts—and lookie what Criterion Channel just dredged up for March. I spoke it into existence! 😂📽️

God Told Me To As tight-knit a community as we have here, and as much as we collectively love film, we don’t all want to be pushing the envelop every time we spin a disc. Some people can’t stomach outrageous viol…

So very true. I dubbed it a “twisted masterpiece” at a film site I wrote for back in 2008. I love that one, and Q, to the death. ranylt.wordpress.com/film/retrosp...

I was taking a dance class with a trans woman in *checks notes* 1985, and none of the kids or adults even blinked, though she was “out” among us.

Yes, it does feel like many progressives have recently been hate-washed by social media and, well, the media.

“Why I Will Never Go on a Cooking Competition Show,” by Ranylt Richildis

Pretty sure the Venn diagram of Project Runway contestants who can’t sew and people who think the slop they produce with GenAI is “art” is one big, naked circle.

Write the book you would like to see someone pull from a higgledy piggledy pile in a secondhand shop 63 years after your death and say, "This looks fucking weird. I think I will buy it for Joan."

Yup. Radu Jude himself is opposed to the Sequoia funding, but his films are still on there. I’m trying to support HIM rather than Mubi.

Re the names, it’s ridiculous. I remember being big mad when Mubi changed from The Auteurs. I hate tech nonsense names with a passion.

Mubi has a $1 a month for 3 months on right now, so they’re only getting $3 from me while I finally see The Substance, Die My Love, etc. That said, it’s Tubi that’s owned by Fox/Murdoch. I think Mubi is British-owned?

4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days (Cristian Mungiu, 2008) Romanians may have sensed what stirred on their domestic film front in 2005 with the release of Puiu’s The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, but the rest of the world only whisp…
