Presumably to deter refugees from coming, which would then lead to their separation from their families, who would be left to fend for themselves. Why would we try to deter genuine refugees from coming? Cruel and neglectful of our duties as a liberal state.

As @davidallengreen.bsky.social points out: “The ECHR is integral to the Good Friday Agreement. And under Article 1 it may not be open to the United Kingdom to be a party to the ECHR and pick-and-choose who within its jurisdiction can have the benefit of the rights.”

Again - the reason that the Good Friday Agreement locks in the ECHR is that the UK had repeatedly been held accountable by the European Court of Human Rights for human rights breaches during the Troubles - while national courts had failed to do so, even upholding miscarriages of justice

What I find most interesting about the Policy Exchange report is the semi-colonial attitude to Ireland- a co-signatory of the agreement backed up by the EU.

Disrupting justice and security cooperation between the UK and Ireland - and the EU more widely - will leave us less rather than more safe.

The GFA expressly requires access to court in Northern Ireland for ECHR.

But what Straw says is not tested, just repeated, and so a "both sides" "debate" is created.
