I can't believe I missed this announcement... Except for the fact that it happened to coincide with my PhD defense. That's probably the only thing that could have distracted me from the fact that my favorite series of the last few years is coming out with its THIRD and FINAL (!!) book!!!

New Book - Putting Down Roots: Métis Agency, Land Use, and Women’s Food Labour in a Qu’Appelle Valley Road Allowance Community Putting Down Roots explores Métis women’s land-based labour and resilience in Qu’Appelle road allowance communities amid colonial displacement.

"They were places where cultural continuity and connection to the land endured, and where everyday practices—particularly women’s work in food production—sustained families and affirmed Métis identity." - Cheryl Troupe

A pinkish blob in a pale pink background. Text in grey reads 'Conference registration is Open'. Below that, it reads 'early registration ends March 31st', and then 'caa 2026, Canmore, Alberta' in smaller grey letters before the rest. There is a reddish figure to the left with its arms in the air.

What if, hear me out, we supported the researchers we already have (myself & my colleagues included) who are struggling to find finding & research positions as it is, & are frequently looking outside the continent for actual opportunities?

I've been having SO MUCH FUN reading this book by @jbensonink.bsky.social! Only about 100 pages in... But I can't stop giggling and kicking my feet. This is exactly what I needed! (I also need to be friends with Ellie and Constance)

Robyn, are you aware of any news articles about this stuff? I'm getting the feeling Canadian researchers are not aware of this enough and the lack of media coverage may part of this.

The chair has a dark, reddish-brown stained wood frame with turned legs and a carved, scalloped crest rail supported by small spindles. The key feature is the decorative splint-woven back panel and woven seat.

The tall, rectangular back panel is filled with woven materials decorated with porcupine quills, dyed fibers, or fabric appliques in a vibrant, complex geometric design. The pattern features a large central eight-pointed star or rosette in light brown, red, blue, and black, surrounded by bold wedges and checkerboard patterns in white, red, black, and gold/tan.

What do you get when you combine traditional Mi’kmaw quill work with furniture-making techniques of the 1800s? A triumph in design that became all the rage in Victorian Nova Scotia.

Hey! Are you sure being on social media is what you need right now? Maybe you'd be better served by a book, a Discord call with friends, or diving face-first into a tub of chocolate pudding.

If socials are right? Then great. But please be good to yourselves.
