It's really unhealthy to glamorize "grind" mentality, but like... I'm up til 4am pretty much every night trying to make life work and at a certain point I have to be proud of *something*.

Basically, dice rolls as "circumstances / luck" and character sheets as "training / skill", and the outcomes are a combination of the two factors in almost every case. Are they good at this but got unlucky? Terrible at this but thank God it worked out? Perfect at this and it was a breeze?

I just did a whole video about this lol. I tent to rule on the side of the player's choice - if they've specifically built their character to do something and still fail, it's a matter of bad luck, but if they fail at something they're NOT built for it might just be a lack of knowledge.

Second one, dead during the planning phase, hasn't even started yet - and that one was supposed to replace the third one....

This exact kind of tension/horror/conflict is a core aspect of every game I ever run. It's not always easy to get the players to stick to it, but it's always worth it.
