The Deaf in the Comoros, Timor-Leste, Equatorial Guinea, and Niger have remained too divided to form a proper sign language, and don’t have the resources to form a new one.

Sign language is language.

It deserves to thrive just as spoken language does.

No country is innocent.

Only four countries worldwide have made sign language an official language of the country on the same level as spoken languages. South Korea, South Africa, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea.

Russia, China, and Singapore are all known to enforce spoken language-coded signing systems in favor of distinct sign grammatical structures (signed Russian, signed Mandarin, and signed English).

War-torn states don’t have the ability to form a Deaf community to begin with.

Many distinct sign languages in Western, Central, and Southern Africa are dying out in favor of ASL due to US influence being strong through humanitarian efforts. ASL also has near-complete control of the Caribbean.

The government of Turkmenistan is restricting the formation of a sign language.

Israel, China, the US, Canada, and more all have multiple minority sign languages used by ethnic minorities who are actively oppressed by the majority ethnic group.

Furthermore, Kurdish Sign Language is seeing further dilution as the states overseeing Kurdish-speaking regions maintain control.

Sign languages, *plural,* are being heavily oppressed in the Arab world in favor of a unified sign language that ignores Levantine and Maghrebi linguistic differences, much like spoken Arabic. Additionally, sign languages in Vietnam and Myanmar are being forcefully unified for the same reason.

I have the fortune of using a sign language that is *only* endangered by the present state of legislation, ideologies, and audism.

Now think of the languages of the Deaf people in places where dominant beliefs are that sign languages are counter to proper language development.

Sign language is language.

It is not x spoken language on the hands.

In English, the phrase “I am going to the store” is signed “STORE, ME GO.”

Sign languages are distinct languages with grammatical formations and linguistic properties unique to themselves.

And all of them are endangered.

For the record: there are about 300 sign languages around the world. Depending on how you consider linguistic variation, some linguists have suggested the existence of upwards of 700.

To expand this beyond just personality disabilities: “jokes” like “it’s always the quiet ones,” if you think about it, actually highlight how failure to support and treat mental illnesses can lead to the development of incredibly severe disabilities.

And *still* that person is not beyond help.

I would never excuse the actions of anyone due to their disability, but I will fault society for, for example, not nurturing healthy sexual outlets to explore kinks in a safe and ethical manner *before* that person becomes, say, a serial murderer and rapist.

“[Evil person] is a narcissist and a sociopath” and phrases like it should clue you in to how society fails to support and offer interventions for the personality disabled, not that personality disabled people are evil. That so many of society’s worst villains are disabled should reflect on society.
