Tiny forests, huge claims: The evidence gap behind the Miyawaki method for forest restoration To scale up restoration effectively, practitioners and policymakers should prioritize methods supported by robust empirical evidence rather than relying on untested claims. Our findings highlight the...

I often get asked about the Miyawaki method of forest restoration, usually by people who have heard extraordinary claims for it. Morales et al. (2025) have reviewed the evidence and found it to be weak or absent. 🌏πŸ§ͺ🌳🌲 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

People find the superlatives appealing - taller, denser, faster growth! - but aren't aware that very densely-planted trees will compete with each other causing high levels of mortality. In my view, given the shortage of native tree stock here in Ireland, it's not the best use of a scarce resource

Zoomed-in, cropped close-up photos of parts of the plant described (but not named) in this accompanying poem titled A Wee Wildflowerhour Workout:

Currently
and colourfully
out we come
in warming sun
Springtime gems
on woody stems
Leaves indented,
strongly scented
Flowers grouped,
groupings drooped
Naturalised
Medium-sized
Human height
Neophyte
A little game:
What’s my name?

Photographed in East Lothian, Scotland, in March 2025.
