one of the coolest things about ChatGPT is how you can actually just never use it. you can fill your whole entire life with simply not once using it. it's incredible.

Pretty sure real science is actually reading the papers, thinking very deeply, and more, before writing, not generating literature review-like objects with no authorial intent or legwork

Linguistics Out of the Closet | Cadernos de Linguística Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin image/svg+xml

Today is #ComingOutDay—and we have two queer linguistic literature tips to go with it! First off, Tyler Kibbey’s (2021) essay “Linguistics Out of the Closet” (#OpenAccess in @cadlin.bsky.social) calls for a “queering” of the discipline of linguistics altogether.

The argument that capitalism thrives off normativity ignores the
fact that it also thrives off diversity, pluralism, fashion, and market
segments. While the heteronormative family is productive for capital,
queer urban individualists and drop-out counter-culturalists are also
productive for capital – the former as ‘creatives’ in the labor market,
the latter as a surplus population (or, in the US, low-cost service
industry labor). Queers without children are also not entirely outside
the family matrix in that unmarried and childless family members
are often taxed with eldercare. It is romantic to think that you can
change the world through diverse sexuality, creative self-expression,
and communal bonding. But you can’t.
Also, trans and intersexed people should not be used as a flag
of radical possibility for a new, postgendered future. First of all,
trans and intersexed people are, more often than not, gendered.
Second, trans bodies have enough pressures without being required
to have to intentionally position their bodies as political objects.11
However, if queerness is not progressive, it is also not reactionary or
a product of bourgeois deviation, as it was sometimes caricatured
by mid-century Marxist and Third Worldist movements. Nor is it
a Eurocentric import external to precolonial peoples. It is also not

Calls: Queer Linguistics at the Interface Between Grammatical and Social Structure 2nd Call for Papers: Queer Linguistics applies insights from Queer Theory to linguistics. More specifically, it seeks to explore the intersections of language and social identity informed by a non-binary, social constructionist and interactional perspective on gender and sexuality. Queer linguistic research investigates how speakers use language to subvert and reconfigure linguistic and socio-cultural hegemonies. As a growing area of inquiry, it critically explores variation, creativity, and
