I adopted three dogs at the same time and hadn't thought about what that meant as far as them aging and dying.

That seems excessive. In any context where the whole continent is being referred to, it's usually qualified as North America, South America, or "the Americas" if it applies to both. In any other context, you're usually referring to a specific country. This guy is being beyond pedantic.
