I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

One issue we discuss in this episode is the overpoliticization of the Spanish judiciary. But even for the Spanish Supreme Court, its decision to announce the guilty verdict in the absurd lawfare case against the attorney general on the #20N anniversary is a bit on the nose

Misremembering Franco Spain's new 'memory law' attempts to grapple with Franco-era crimes – but without acknowledging the continuity between the dictatorship and the current system, there can be no real justice.

On the 50th anniversary of Franco's death, re-sharing this article @eoghangilmartin.bsky.social and I wrote about Francoism and justice.

Sadly, Manuel passed away without ever seeing justice for his brother. Fausto, fortunately, was able to recover his father's body tribunemag.co.uk/2021/08/misr...

In 2014 Spain seemed in the midst of full blown regime crisis as the traditional two-party political system imploded. In this 1st part, I discuss how institutional politics stabilized around the figure of Sánchez, not, as was the case elsewhere in Europe, in terms of some grand coalition arrangement

At least 135 mutilated bodies of Palestinians had been held at notorious Israeli jail, say Gaza officials Documents indicate they came from Sde Teiman, which already faces allegations of torture and unlawful deaths * Middle East crisis – live updates At least 135 mutilated bodies of Palestinians returned by Israel to Gaza had been held in a notorious detention centre already facing allegations of torture and unlawful deaths in custody, officials from Gaza’s health ministry told the Guardian. The director general of the health ministry, Dr Munir al-Bursh, and the spokesperson for Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, where the bodies are being examined, said a document found inside each body bag indicated the bodies all came from Sde Teiman, a military base in the Negev desert, where, according to photos and testimonies published by the Guardian last year, Palestinian detainees were held in cages, blindfolded and handcuffed, shackled to hospital beds, and forced to wear nappies. How Europe’s Farm Subsidy Scheme Fails Workers As lawmakers concentrate on meat bans, the CAP continues to bankroll exploitation in the fields

This week's issue is about a very timely cross-border investigation that illustrated the shortfalls of the current system in protecting a crucial asset of European agriculture: farm workers.

Full disclosure: I played a small role mentoring the team behind this.

“That the EU is funnelling large sums of public money into farms accused and even convicted of labour abuses is scandalous,” said @deschuttero.bsky.social. "Public funds continue to subsidise farms implicated in exploitative food production, including modern-day slavery."
