My Biddy Baxter memory: enlisting her Boudica-like power to argue our way into a crematorium where a mutual friend was going to be sent off with no-one in attendance. I took the service and pressed the button. Afterwards the entire congregation went back to her place in one taxi. RIP.

It's overplayed and all that but after watching several acts on the main stage at V98 in the absolute pouring rain on the Sunday afternoon, RW came on and started his set with an absolutely barnstorming eight minute Let Me Entertain You and it genuinely cheered everyone up.

There were some fun bits on the Skinner version but he was a bit too generous a host, so you had one of our greatest comedians saying nothing while someone who wasn't did a boring riff on people in the middle lane of the motorway

The thing about the Hancock version is that he had loads of scripted gags, so even if the guest wasn't very funny he was, whereas under Merton on TV it just became a chat show and if you weren't interested in the guest there was nothing else for you

If The One Show has finished and we haven't started eating, it is officially a late tea
